Yes we are still breeding our beautiful dogs. We are active in 2021 and loving life in Minden, Ontario.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a wonderful little dog. Big enough to be a playful companion yet small enough to pick up and carry. I have always maintained that the English Cocker Spaniel is the best kept secret in the dog world.
My husband Rick grew up with English Cocker Spaniels in his life and he introduced me to this breed. I fell in love with them when we bought our first puppy Riley, from Lynne Bamford of Joyousgarde Registered Kennel in 1998. We have been involved with this breed ever since. We purchased our second puppy Oscar from Lynne in 2000. With the purchase of Oscar a new phase in our life began as we started showing and breeding dogs. Oscar, Joyousgarde Our Chance for Joy earned his Canadian Championship in November 2002.
Gracie was added to our little family when we purchased her from Noel Hynds of Autumnfire Registered Kennel in December 2002. Gracie, Autumnfire’s Graceful earned her Canadian Championship at the United Kennel Club Dog Show in Montreal, November 2004.
Oscar and Gracie produced four litters of puppies for us. Sydney, Can. Ch. Cockerlea's Heart of Mine is a lovely blue roan female that we kept from our second litter. Syd recognized this as her home right away and quickly bonded with Rick.
Sydney has produced four litters for us. November 2008 she was bred to an orange roan male Jazz, Can. Ch. Cedarstone's Jazz de Malysse. This resulted in 6 female puppies being whelped January 2009. In June 2010 Syd was bred to Niles, Am. Ch Brasswinds Variegated Illusion and in August 2010 she whelped 4 puppies - 2 males and 2 females. Sydney was bred to Tucker,Am. Ch. Winsome Gwynllyn Simply Surreal and in 2012 they had 8 puppies - 5 males and 3 females on February 27, 2012. We repeated the breeding with Tucker, and we had a lovely litter of 3 girls and 3 boys in the spring of 2013.
Our Miss Poppy, Cockerlea's Ebony and Ivory, is a pretty black and white female that we kept from Sydney and Jazz's litter. Poppy simply charmed us all and then stole our hearts. She is a favourite with children and adults. July 2012 Poppy was bred to Tucker, Am. Ch. Wisome Gwynllyn Simply Surreal. We had one nice puppy, Murphy, who is Cockerlea's Just Priceless. We of course kept him and he is a welcome member of our little family.
Our new Canadian Champion Cockerlea's Just Priceless, Murphy earned his championship under Judge Jim Reynolds at the Ottawa Kennel Club on November 16, 2013. Murphy is from our Poppy and Tucker breeding. He started his championship journey a month ago and it is now completed. We are so pleased to have another Champion at Cockerlea. Murphy is a handsome fellow who has great genetic markers. Once he matures he will be available for stud to approved females. Murphy obtained his American Championship thanks to the wonderful help of Chereen Nawrocki and Dennis Collins. Dennis showed him for us and Murphy was quick to get his dual championship.
Poppy was bred to a fine black, white and tan male, Howie, UKC/AM CH BJS Midnight Special Tri n Deal. They produced a lovely litter of 5 puppies for us in October 2013. We had 2 girls and 3 boys. This litter produced our first orange and white as well as black, white and tan pups. We kept an orange and white little gal, Penny, Cockerlea's Copper Penny. We have high hopes for her. She is a sweet tempered beautiful little pup who will be shown soon.
Poppy's last litter with Howie produced a lovely tri girl for us. We have called her Cockerlea's Under Your Spell, call name is Jules and her forever home is with us. Jules is a lovely addition to our little family of dogs.
Simon, CH Cockerlea's Justin Time was briefly shown as a puppy. He earned two Best Puppy in Group awards at the Bracebridge Shows where there was a good selection of pups in Group. We let him mature over the winter and then he was out again in the spring where he earned his Canadian Championship in just over a month. We are proud of our boys and our dogs.
Our Penny, Cockerlea's Copper Penny is also pointed toward her Canadian Championship. Penny will have a litter for us in 2016 and we expect some lovely puppies from this very pretty girl. Again temperament and health are paramount for us.
When I started my breeding program, I was given some excellent advice from a friend who said "That if I was seriously going to breed and sell puppies, I must remember I had a responsibility and that was to make certain every puppy was placed into a good home.” I can proudly say that all of our puppies have gone to wonderful people and excellent homes.
Our breeding program is focused on temperament and health.
